The ADE Thursday Echobox, Podium Mozaiek and Foam are collaborating on a special evening including a workshop, panel talk and a jam session.

Workshop
At Podium Mozaiek, Echobox will be hosting a hands-on workshop ‘Improvisation as composition’ where the duo EIN L AQL will be introducing the participants to modal thinking, microtonality, the relationships between intervals, and the connection to contemporary composition. The participants will be introduced to the pioneers of Arabic maqam, who have shaped the sound of the MENA region, through a listening session.

Panel Talk

Following this, a lecture and panel programme takes place, connected to Foam's exhibition Al Nisa / النساء, curated by Middle East Archive. Photographer Yomna El Beyaly, whose work is also on view at Mercatorplein, gives the lecture on identity, femininity and self-representation. She is then joined by Karmel and Noise Diva for a panel discussion moderated by Sarah Saleh. Together, they explore themes of representation, archiving, diaspora and the female perspective, drawing on photography, visual culture and music.

Jam Session

The day will conclude in a Jam Session led by EIN L AQL, where the participants from the workshop can show what they have learned during the workshop, but the jam is free for anyone to participate in! Bring an instrument and join in.

The whole day program is free to attend, but make sure to sign up for a reserve a participant ticket or a visitors ticket.
