Daniel Herskedal Trio
Cinematic soundscapes of tuba and bass trumpet, between jazz and classical.
The Norwegian tubist and composer Daniel Herskedal treats his instrument as a full-fledged melodic voice and continuously pushes its boundaries. In his music, the spirit of jazz and the compositional craftsmanship of classical music come together. He has written commissioned works for, among others, the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Royal Norwegian Navy Band, and collaborated with the Russian Patriarchate Choir from Moscow. For his collaboration with Marja Mortensson, he received the Norwegian Grammy in 2019, followed by an Ambies Award in 2021 for the music for the podcast 9/12.
With the albums Slow Eastbound Train, The Roc, and Voyage, Herskedal has built a cinematic sound world where space and simplicity weigh more than effect. On his album A Single Sunbeam, he layers tuba and bass trumpet into broad, ambient sound layers, in the extension of the earlier Call for Winter. In our hall, he brings this music in trio, with pianist Eyolf Dale and percussionist Helge Andreas Norbakken.
'An impressive work from a singular musician, the tuba has never sounded this cool' (All About Jazz).
