Dave Douglas Quartet – Four Freedoms

New quartet around American trumpet giant, famous for collaboration with Tom Waits, John Zorn, and many others.

‘Freedom of speech, freedom of worship. Freedom from want, freedom from fear’: these four freedoms were declared in 1941 by American President Roosevelt. On his new album Four Freedoms, Dave Douglas shows that music can reflect these freedoms. He also wrote special compositions for this album dedicated to his current band members: pianist Marta Warelis, who made a name for herself in Amsterdam, the inventive bassist Nick Dunston, and master drummer Joey Baron.

Dave Douglas has been a household name in the music world since the 1980s. He recorded hundreds of albums and worked with jazz legends like Horace Silver and pop heroes like Tom Waits. An important chapter was the groundbreaking ensemble Masada led by avant-garde composer John Zorn. He also made a well-received album with the pianist/composer Misha Mengelberg, so important for our stage, in a quartet with drummer Han Bennink.

‘Full of artistic freshness and a subtle, nearly surreal wit, the music hovers between form and abstraction’ (JazzTrail).
