We are Fax Machine.
After founder, drummer, and singer Max van Rossem passed away last year, we finished our EP. We invite you to celebrate this with us.
As we hold this record in our hands, we look back on the nine years of musical friendship that preceded it. From the very first time in our rehearsal room, when we wrote Giraffe and Variations, how excited we were that we had written our own songs; how cool we thought the one-word titles, to our last studio session with Max, when he was still alive.
For us, this record feels like a time machine: Spreadsheets of Love (demo, released online in late 2024) has a more acoustic, funky disco sound, while Algorithms of Devotion has a more electronic sound, with more drive, depth, and darkness; more corporate funk, which we were still developing when Max passed away.
We have a vivid image of Max in the studio when we were working on Algorithms of Devotion: jumping and dancing with the vocoder in one hand and the microphone in the other, completely absorbed in the music with that mischievous look in his eyes…
Sadly, he passed away before the tracks were finished, but we decided to complete them anyway. That wasn't always easy. It was emotionally tough, especially in the beginning. Ultimately, however, we found a lot of joy in the process: we were making music with our friend again, and it was a musical puzzle worth solving. We re-recorded everything except the vocals (we only had his first takes)... in short, we had to make those vocals sound groovy.
To celebrate the completion of this posthumous project, we invite you to our EP release party, titled FAX & FRIENDS.
Come dance and celebrate life with us. For this is no memorial service. This is a big party, in the spirit of our friend, who simply had to leave the party sooner. But the beat goes on, and we are determined to keep dancing.
