The Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O’Sullivan broke through in the early seventies with the ballad Nothing Rhymed – a hit in many countries and even a number 1 hit in the Netherlands. Melodious, well-crafted piano pop and (in his early days) a shabby suit with a cap became the trademark of O’Sullivan, who as a songwriter occasionally even reached the level of Paul McCartney.
