Interlinie #3 Mother Tongue & Bex Burch: As Yet Untitled
New mix of musical adventurers from Amsterdam, Berlin, and more.
Interlinie is a series of events focused on mixing and matching musicians from diverse environments for improvisation, experimental music, and jazz. For Interlinie #3, they travel together through Europe in two formations: Mother Tongue from Amsterdam and the new ensemble of percussionist Bex Burch from Berlin. Interlinie is organized by Space Is the Place, known for the Interplanetary and Intergalactic Nights at BIMHUIS.
As Yet Untitled: Bex Burch – Esther Coorevits – Stan Maris – James McClure. The originally British percussionist Bex Burch embraces repetition, space, and chaos in a form she describes as 'messy minimalism'. She built her own percussion instrument based on the xylophone and the gyil from Ghana. For Interlinie #3, she presents her new composition for a special ensemble: trumpeter James McClure, violinist Esther Coorevits, and accordionist Stan Maris. As Yet Untitled unfolds through a dialogue between sounds from nature, instruments, and voices from the audience.
Mother Tongue: A Senegalese griot singer, an Amsterdam improviser, and a Puerto Rican jazz drummer find each other in Mother Tongue. Mola Sylla grew up in the tradition of the griots, the West African storytellers. His singing and playing on m’bira and xalam deviate surprisingly from any convention. Here, drummer Frank Rosaly joins in, from his background in experimental rock, Chicago jazz, and Latin American music. Oscar Jan Hoogland plays his self-made clavichord, where 17th-century principles meet a tension of 220 volts, combined with a collection of household items.
Mother Tongue: Mola Sylla – vocals, m’bira, xalam, Oscar Jan Hoogland – electric clavichord, Frank Rosaly – drums. Bex Burch: As Yet Untitled: Bex Burch – xylophone, percussion, vocals, Esther Coorevits – viola, bass, percussion, vocals, James McClure – trumpet, percussion, vocals, Stan Maris – accordion, percussion, vocals.
