Jasper Blom, Felix Schlarmann & Sean Fasciani – WonderYears

Three improvisers rediscover the work of one of the most creative songwriters of all time, Stevie Wonder.

Fifty years after the release of Songs in the Key of Life, Jasper Blom, Sean Fasciani, and Felix Schlarmann bring this repertoire back to life on their album WONDERYEARS, in the open trio setting of saxophone, double bass, and drums. They use the characteristic melodies and rich harmonies as a starting point for contemporary arrangements: sometimes they let the original song clearly emerge, other times they expand into rhythmically and harmonically adventurous vistas. Iconic melodies alternate with ecstatic bursts of improvisation. WONDERYEARS is released on October 8 on DOX records.

Stevie Wonder caused a musical earthquake in the seventies: in a short time he released a series of legendary albums, almost all of which compositions grew into world hits and have since become part of our collective memory. His irresistible mix of grooves, catchy melodies, and subtle jazz influences also proves to be an ideal breeding ground for improvisation.
