Luís Vicente Trio – Expanding Horizons with Leo Genovese & Tony Malaby

Expressive trumpeter from Lisbon meets free-spirited players from New York. 'Freshness through freedom' (Jazzword).

Communication and dialogue are important principles for the Luís Vicente Trio, leading in Portuguese jazz. From Vicente's compositions, the trio explores new paths, depending on environment, company, and atmosphere. Now the trio is expanded with two equally free-thinking American players who previously impressed on our stage: saxophonist Tony Malaby, who played here with, among others, William Parker and Tim Berne, and pianist Leo Genovese, who was active here in the bands of Esperanza Spalding.

The Luís Vicente Trio gained international respect with their albums Chanting In The Name Of and Come Down Here. On these, the players show their adventurous spirit, emotional depth, and ability to discover new sounds. Vicente's open melodies and the inventive playing of bassist Gonçalo Almeida and drummer Pedro Melo Alves repeatedly lead to surprising outcomes. On Come Down Here, they explore diverse influences, from Don Cherry’s Old and New Dreams Quartet to the music of the Afro-Brazilian martial art capoeira.

'Highlighting freshness through freedom, the trio on Chanting In The Name Of stays away from the conventional tropes' (Ken Waxman of Jazzword on the Luís Vicente Trio).
