Peter Evans Being & Becoming ft. Joel Ross, Nick Jozwiak & Tyshawn Sorey

International quartet shapes collective improvisation in the moment.

Being & Becoming brings together four musicians who are reshaping contemporary improvisation: besides Evans, these are vibraphonist Joel Ross, bassist Nick Jozwiak, and, since the spring of 2025, drummer Tyshawn Sorey, one of the most respected figures in creative music today. Not a fusion of styles or collage, but invention in the moment: music that seems composed as it arises, and at the same time inevitably takes shape.

The band does not seek density but space. Each piece builds its own architecture, from sober motifs to surging collective climaxes, with Evans' trumpet cutting through lyrically or fiercely. Their album Ars Ludicra, recorded in the legendary Rudy Van Gelder Studio, marks a new step in the group's development.

'Stunning, to say the least: refined yet raw, full of reckless daring' (Free Jazz Blog).
