The Breath & Spafford Campbell

New visions on folk by British duos with members from among others The Cinematic Orchestra.

'Folk roots but different horizons', wrote The Guardian about The Breath, the innovative singer-songwriter duo from Manchester. In this double concert, they are preceded by another duo with an equally liberating view on folk, Spafford Campbell from London.

The Breath immediately touches with their disarming, personal songs, which can be about summer and first love, but also about injustice and sorrow. While Ríoghnach Connolly intoxicates you with her voice, you are enchanted by the guitar playing of songwriter Stuart McCallum, also a member of The Cinematic Orchestra. The Breath has already released several albums on Real World, the label of Peter Gabriel.

'A peculiar, disturbing beauty', is how Mojo described the music of Spafford Campbell. Their first album Tomorrow Held was praised by critics and awarded five-star reviews in, among others, Songlines. The fascinating interplay of Owen Spafford on fiddle and Louis Campbell on guitar has elements of jazz, electronics, and chamber music. But it remains clear that they grew up playing folk music.
