The Outskirts + Marta Warelis

Formed in Chicago, improvisation trio expanded with idiosyncratic improvising keyboardist.

Dave Rempis, Ingebrigt Håker Flaten, and Frank Rosaly have been playing together since 2006, when Flaten lived in Chicago for three years. The trio built its repertoire in clubs like the Velvet Lounge, the Hungry Brain, the Hideout, and Elastic. Those years of collaboration resulted in a natural flow where written material and completely free improvisation merge.

On the double CD Orbital, they juxtapose two ways of working. The first disc revolves around compositions that remain subordinate to what the group does with them on the spot. The second, recorded in Antwerp, is free improvisation from the first note and features the special pianist Marta Warelis as a guest. Warelis played with, among others, Dave Douglas, Ab Baars, and Carlos Zingaro and was a key figure in the Amsterdam improvisation scene for years until she moved to Berlin in 2024. As a quartet, they come to our venue, with top-notch improvisation.
